I’ve always been a fan of Spike Milligan, or to give him a formal introduction Terence Alan Milligan KBE.
Like most folks, I think, I first heard of him on the Goon Show when one of the BBC Radio Stations was repeating them. Then his TV Shows Q5, Q6 etc.
However, I think his most entertaining work, for me at least, were his war diaries, a seven title set, starting with “Adolf Hitler: My part in His Downfall”. He managed to take the horrors of war and inject some comedy into his own experiences.
Even in death he managed to get the last laugh. His gravestone bears the inscription:
Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite
Translated into English from Irish original it reads “I told you I was sick”. Typical Spike.
