Looking back through life certain songs trigger certain memories.
For me, Showaddywaddy will always hold a special place in my heart. I think it was 1976 or maybe 1977 when I encountered the band on the jukebox at my local Boys’ Club. It was Judo Club night and this gorgeous girl had joined for the first time.
I was smitten at first sight.
After the training session we tended to hang around the club drinking pop and trying to outdo eachother with our Kung Fu moves, even though our Judo suits were made of a much sturdier construction.
That gorgeous girl hung around too, trying to fit in with the others present.
I’ve no idea why but I thought I’d put some music on. Long before the repeat function turned up on any music player, I’d stuffed most of my pocket money into the jukebox playing this song over and over, much to the annoyance of my friends.
Needless to say, that gorgeous girl didn’t give me a second look, being much more interested in the older guys who were there instead of us lads of the same age. I was gutted.
Needless to say I’d been confined to at best, the ‘friend zone’.
This song still brings to mind that night at the Boys’ Club. I wonder where she is now. Wherever she is, I hope she is happy and has had a good life.
